지옥의 가장 뜨거운 곳은 도덕적 위기의 시대에 중립을 지킨 자들을 위해 예약되어 있다.
“The hottest places in Hell are reserved for those who in a period of moral crisis maintain their neutrality.”

(찾아보고 나서 알게 되었지만) 재밌는 것은, 단테의 신곡에는 이러한 구절이 존재하지 않는다는 점이다. 물론 비슷한 구절이 없는 것은 아니지만, 이렇게 세련된(?) 인용구로 다시 태어나는 데에 지대한 공헌을 한 것은 다름 아닌 존 F. 케네디 (John F. Keneddy) 라고 한다. 예일 대학 출판부에서 발간한 인용구 모음집 (The Yale book of quotations) 에 따르자면 케네디가 오클라호마주의 털사에서 1959년 9월 16일 연설한 연설문에서 언급한 바 있으며, 실제 연설 내용은 다음과 같다.

“This is not a time to keep the facts from the people – to keep them complacent. To sound the alarm is not to panic but to seek action from an aroused public. For, as the poet Dante once said: ‘The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in a time of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.’”

이 인용구의 바탕이 되었으리라 “추측되는” 원 구절은 아래와 같다고 한다. (정확하게 얘기하자면, 원문이 아니라 – 원문이야 당연히 이탈리아어로 쓰여있다보니 내 영역 밖이다 – Mark Musa 라는 사람이 영문으로 번역한 문장이다.)

원문에는 “지옥의 가장 뜨거운 곳이 남겨져 있다”가 아니라 “지옥에서도 받아주려 하지 않는다”라고 되어 있는데 말이지.

오늘의 교훈: 인용하기 전에는 출처를 확인하고, 인용하고 난 다음에는 출처도 함께 밝히는 습관을 갖자.
